Inadequate bone volume can occur for several reasons, including:
Vital structures such as the sinus or nerves being too close to the implant site.
Depending on the degree and nature of the bone defect, different techniques can be used. In some cases, a simple procedure using commercially available biomaterials or bone substitutes may be sufficient. In more advanced cases, a combination of your own bone and biomaterials may be required. For extreme cases, bone volume may need to be rebuilt using a block bone graft.
Bone grafting can often be performed at the same time as implant placement, but in some situations, grafting must be done first and allowed to heal for 4–6 months before the implants are placed.
